The best time to plant blackberry bushes is in early spring, make sure to keep the plant cool and roots moist until you can put it in the ground.
- To start, soak for about 4 hours.
- Once you finish soaking the blackberry bush, cut off any broken roots. Make sure to keep roots out of the sun and covered to avoid killing the plant.
- Dig the hole(s), making sure to take into account root growth. Dig holes around 4 inches apart between bushes and 8 inches apart for multiple rows.
- Spread the roots in the hole(s) and shovel dirt back into the holes.
- Time to water! It’s important to keep the surface of the soil moist because the plants are shallow-rooted. Give each plant around 1-2 inches of water and the soil should not be dry at 6 inches of depth.
- Fertilize 3 inches away from the base to avoid root burn. Nothing strong is needed since the bush was just planted.
- Add mulch for the first year and only add more in the following years if the soil is sandy. It helps keep the weeds down and prevents the sun from damaging the roots as they gain strength.
